Concentration #1
My concentration is flowers and how colors represent emotion. This first one I chose is supposed to be sad, so I used darker blues and purples. The composition is (hopefully) umbrella shaped, which fits with the sad theme of this one because umbrellas mean rain and rain isn't exactly a sad thing, but it can be, depending on the circumstances and the mood that is supposed to be conveyed by the rain. The flower is also droopy, which seems sadder, and the stem is a muted greenish color instead of something more vibrant.
A principle of design that I used is emphasis. It is shown in the contrast between the dark colored flower and the lighter colored background to make the flower be the focal point.
A style of art that I (tried to) reference was impressionism. I like the brush strokes a lot and so I attempted to do that. It didn't work that well, which is fine because I wasn't completely focused on that. I also tried to do something similar to what the people from the homework assignment did with brush strokes.
I feel like I'm maybe getting better with composition and planning out different compositions. I tried a lot of different things in my sketchbook to see what would be good, and some of my next projects will be based on those thumbnails. I also want to get better at doing acrylics in general and so I will probably focus on those more in my concentration. I enjoyed making this, even if the choice to switch from some flower I just made up for the composition to something of a similar composition but completely different image was right before I was supposed to start painting. It isn't my favorite piece I've done, but it is good practice and I think my projects in the future will only get better. I also really like how the center of the flower turned out, even if it isn't the best. I had no idea what to do, but I tried some different things and eventually it came to something I liked that was better than what I thought I could do.
